Carmel Magazine (
http://carmelmagazine.com) is a regional publication in Central California covering food, wine, travel, and art. My astrophotography was featured in the Summer 2021 issue (p. 186 – 191). Since my photography in not food, wine, or travel, the magazine put it in the category of “art.” As many of you know, I have been exploring astrophotography as a fine art for the last few years. I have entered my work in several general photography competitions and have prints of my images represented by an art gallery, Gallery Sur (
www.gallerysur.com). This article in a lifestyle magazine is further evidence that astrophotography is beginning to be recognized as art or décor by the public. I feel we are fortunate to be exploring the creative possibilities of astrophotography at this time of growing public interest in our imagery.
Presentation by J-P Metsavainio (Open to Everyone)
The concept of astrophotography as fine art began several years ago and was moved forward by contributors to AstroBin. Among the most noteworthy is J-P Metsavainio (
https://astroanarchy.zenfolio.com/). Most amateur astrophotographers know J-P’s work and use some of the processing techniques that he invented. If you incorporate Tone Mapping in your processing, then you are relying on an innovation of J-P Metsavainio. For more than a decade, his focus has been the combining of art and science in astrophotography. The imagery that has come from his effort is recognized worldwide as groundbreaking for its beauty and dramatic impact, and has been published by National Geographic, Smithsonian, NASA, Sky & Telescope, and many more.
